WITHOUT SACRIFICING SHORT TERM PERFORMANCE
I started coaching with knowledge I gathered from David Marsh, Eddie Reese, and olympic and world record holding teammates. I realized that there was no skill development progression for the sport of swimming, unlike other sports like basketball and football.
I built out the first iteration of my stroke development system by reverse engineering everything I had learned up to this point. The goal was to identify the motor skill and technique progression needed to achieve success. This was where I got to implement all of the info I learned from David Marsh.
I shared my system with the head coach of the club I was working with, and he pretty much blew me off, saying that he used a similar system with his athletes. I covertly installed my system with my9 and under group with MASSIVE success. My group of “slower” 10-13 year old swimmers started beating the “faster” group that the head coach was coaching. I continued to optimize the progression process.
I started to see some serious success with this system. My swimmers held 81% of the team records and runner up team records at the club I was coaching for. The parents started to take notice and were “intrigued” with how I was getting these results. The Head coach started encroaching on my groups around this time.
After some rearranging of groups/ coaches, I face my biggest coaching challenge to date. I’m working with the group I like to call the “Island of Broken Toys”. These kids were lumped together as an afterthought within team priorities. It was the perfect opportunity to prove that my stroke development system was superior to any other out there. The IBT group of lifetime B swimmers started knocking down AA and AAA times left and right. They started beating out kids in the “fast” group and started breaking team records. I finally had serious proof of concept - my stroke development system worked.
I left that club team to pursue Reykli full time. Now, I help coaches and athletes reach their full potential by teaching them what I’ve learned over the course of my career.
